Burkina Faso experiences one of the highest child mortality rates in the world. One in every 15 children there will die before the age of 5 (UNICEF, 2013).

Many of these deaths are caused by diarrheal diseases, which kill an estimated 760,000 children under five each year across the globe (WHO 2010). Diarrhea is the world’s leading cause of malnutrition in children, but can generally be prevented with clean drinking water and adequate hygiene and sanitation.

The Pagaba Foundation works to reduce rates of diarrheal disease through education. We have distributed more than 400 healthcare awareness books to parents in Burkina Faso—these books are designed to be read to children and stress the importance of handwashing and other hygienic practices.
