Burkina Faso is one of the least-developed countries in West Africa. That makes it one of the most dangerous places on Earth for mothers and children.
The landlocked sub-Saharan nation has battled severe drought and crop failures for several decades. Much of the country’s population depends on subsistence farming to survive, so long dry seasons and major crop failures have resulted in high levels of malnutrition. These circumstances are compounded by high rates of disease and a tumultuous political situation.
Burkinabè women face additional challenges. Women in traditional communities have little or no control over their reproductive lives, and often do not have access to even basic healthcare services. Every year, more than 2,000 Burkinabè women die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth (WHO, 2012).
At the Pagaba Foundation, our goal is to empower these women through information. Our posters and pamphlets contain the information women in remote areas need to keep themselves and their children healthy.
